Our first trip on the South Island was to Christchurch. We had a few hours to wander between returning the hire car and getting a lift back, so we gatecrashed a speciality coffee shop Christmas do (getting free coffee and pastries), then went to the cathedral and the museum.
We were astonished by the damage the earthquake had caused to the cathedral and the whole city: there was so much building work ongoing and much of the damage was still visible.
