Books with the Boy: I Really Want That Unicorn by Fabi Santiago

Today, the boy and I are sharing our thoughts on I Really Want That Unicorn by Fabi Santiago.

About the Book:

Love unicorns? Enjoy talent shows? Pick up this book and laugh yourself horse.
Chloe Crocodile is preparing for a talent show – and not just any talent show. The prize is a Big Sparkly Mellow Yellow Unicorn, and Chloe MUST have it. To win, she must make the best rainbow unicorn cake, the best magic castle, the best fairy unicorn outfit AND give the perfect performance on her unicycle.
Chloe is confident she can win. Until Veronica arrives …
A delightfully funny, stylish book with the message that friendship is more important than anything – even unicorns!

His Thoughts:

It was so hard to choose who was the best at the talent show because everyone was good. I liked almost all of it except for the winning because I think Chloe should have won because her unicorn cake was the best. It is nice that they were friends at the end. I would stay friends if I was in a talent show. I would do singing for my talent and I would sing Come Alive from The Greatest Showman and I would try to make a hat that looks like a top hat from the show.  I would give this book sixty thousand stars.

My Thoughts:

This was a really lovely story about the importance of being friends, even in the midst of a competition. Chloe is desperate to win the mellow yellow unicorn and tries her best, but whatever she does, Veronica seems to do it better. S was rooting for Chloe to win. It gave us the opportunity to talk about how important it is to do your best, and not be jealous of other people’s work. We also talked about how important it is to stay friends with people, even when you’re both trying to win the same prize. This would be a great book for any parent to read with their young children.

Thanks for joining us for another Books with the Boy, let us know what you think in the comments. We’re always open to ideas on what you’d like to see more of too!

Thanks to Orchard Books (Hachette Children’s Group) for the review copy. This does not affect our opinions.
