For Christmas Eve and my last Merry Little Bookmas of 2018, Cora from Tea Party Princess has chosen me Fir by Sharon Gosling.
It’s super creepy for winter. Not so much Christmas, but a great antidote to all the cheer. Bonus scares if it’s snowing (that was my mistake).
Oh hi Cora. I don’t think I am ever going to sleep again. Thanks for that. If you’re looking for a book to keep you awake all night in the hope you catch a glimpse of the big dude, this one will do it.
Fir is packed with atmosphere. Set in the middle of a forest in winter, where the family get snowed in. Which under other circumstances would be the perfect Christmas, but this forest seems angry at the humans invading it. I loved the little vignettes between chapters that are from the view of the trees.
Dorothea the house-keeper creeped me out from her first appearance, as did the legends of the valruv. But I think the scariest part for me was the last two chapters which left me screaming WHAT HAPPENED?
I absolutely loved the narrator of this book. She is so sassy and snarky and just perfect.
This is a slow-burn horror story. It was one that I couldn’t put down once I started it. Perfect if you want to scare the living daylights out of yourself.
