I first met Amy of Tomes with Tea at YA shot when we went drinking in a bar near the venue, and honestly, she is just one of the best humans ever. So much fun and such a joy to be around. I was thrilled when she said she’d pick a TBR for me, because she has really eclectic reading tastes and I knew it would be a treat. Here’s what she’s chosen for me to read in April:
1. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
2. Vicious by V. E. Schwab
3. Are We All Lemmings and Snowflakes? by Holly Bourne (I am very excited for this one as Amy and I are going to buddy read it).
4. Scythe by Neal Schusterman.
5. And The Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness.
6. The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O’Farrell.
I’ve also decided to sign up to do the OWLs Readathon this month (check out @MagicalReadthn on Twitter and this You Tube video for the details). I’m aiming for a career as a Hogwarts Professor teaching Transfiguration (I’ve always wanted to be a Ravenclaw McGonagall,OK?). For this I need to pass 7 OWLs (reading one book that fits the prompt for each), Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts and any 5 other subjects. Here is what I plan to read:
1. Transfiguration (a book with a red cover or sprayed edge). I’m using Scythe for this because the cover is largely red.
2. Defence Against the Dark Arts (a book with a title beginning with R). For this, I’ve chosen A Reunion of Ghosts which has been on my shelf FOREVER.
3. Ancient Runes (a retelling). I’ve chosen And The Ocean Was Our Sky which is a Moby Dick retelling.
4. Care of Magical Creatures (a book with a land animal on the cover). Everdark has a wee monkey on the cover, so that’s what I’ll be reading for this. I think Hagrid would approve of this choice.
5. Herbology (a book with a plant on the cover). I’m using The Migration for this. I’ll be honest, I’m not totally sure those are plants on the cover, but they remind me of really lovely exotic flowers, so I’m going with it.
6. Muggle Studies (a contemporary book). I’m reading Are We All Lemmings and Snowflakes? for this.
7. Charms (an age line -read an adult book). I hardly ever read adult books now, but Amy-Louise chose me The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox this month which ticks this box.
So… those are my reads for the month. Have you read any of the books on this list? Are you doing the OWLs readathon?
I too have always wanted to be a Ravenclaw McGonogall, so I wish you every success in fulfilling this career! I think you’ll like Lemmings and Snowflakes a lot, and I’d love to buddy read Gentleman’s Guide with you (I seem to recall us saying we would do this at some point?)

That wee monkey on Everdark is one of my favourite characters I’ve read this year so far. The whole story is great though – are you planning to read Rumblestar when that’s out too? I’m starting it this week and am very excited! Good luck with your OWLs!
