ThursTag: The Halloween Book Tag

Happy Thursday! It’s almost Halloween weekend, awhich seems the perfect time to share the Halloween Book Tag. This was created by NaomiTheBookLover

1. Carving Pumpkins- What book would you carve up and light on fire?

I can’t think of a specific book off the top of my head, but any book where people fall in love and are magically cured by falling in love with someone. I’m not here for that narrative at all. Also anything racist, homophobic, or transphobic can get itself on the fire. And I currently have a very intense hatred for virus narratives because they feel a bit too much like the truth right now.

2. Candy Corn- What book is always sweet?

I feel like I am going to answer a lot of these questions with general vibes rather than specific book titles (this might be the wrong thing but hey ho). I do not read a lot of sweet books in the sense of cute-sweet if that makes sense? I do absolutely love with my whole heart stories with magic, witches, and books with brilliant friendships.

3. Trick or Treat- What character is a treat, what character is a trick?

Oooh, I love this question. This could get into spoiler territory so I am going to try to avoid any new releases. My treat character is Emoni Santiago from With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo. Emoni is such a joy to read about, and her story is brilliant. My trick character is Grace Blackthorn in Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare because I am still not over that sneaky bitch in that first book.

4. Ghosts- What character would you love to visit you as a ghost?

Ash and / or Poppy from Afterlove by Tanya Byrne because I adore them, their story broke me and I need to know what happened to them after the end of that book. I’d also like to know what the afterlife is all about and if Charon had any crack in him on the boat over.

5. Dressing up in costume- What character would you want to be for a day?

Okay, I’m not one for dressing up as a general rule. I don’t hate it, but it’s not my jam. I enjoy a good seasonal outfit (a dress or a jumper) but rarely a full-on costume. I’ve always thought if I ever did a cosplay, it would be someone like Death from Sandman by Neil Gaiman or Sally from Practical Magic because I think dark and twisty or witchy would be my dress up of choice.

6. Wizards and Witches- What is your favourite witch / wizard moment?

Full disclosure, this question asked about a certain famous wizard series that will not be featuring on this here blog again, so I tweaked to to my favourite witch / wizard moment in a book. It has to be the moment in Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend where Jupiter North comes and takes Morrigan away from her toxic family and impending death. I love it.

7. Blood and Gore- What book was so creepy that you had to take a break from it for awhile?

Absolutely Melinda Salisbury’s Hold Back the Tide is the creepiest book I’ve read. I had to pause to steady myself a few times, but still read it in one sitting. If a book was so creepy I had to put it down and take a break, there is zero chance I would be picking it back up again.

Which characters would be your trick and treat characters?
